RVCA is the brainchild of company founder and president, PM Tenore. Transcending the boundaries of traditional action sports apparel, RVCA is a design-driven lifestyle brand free from passing trends. Appearing as a natural on the shelves of boutiques as on those of a local skate shop, RVCA is brought together by a group of like-minded individuals from various subcultures, a collaboration of sorts, a lifestyle within itself. 

RVCA in essence is redefining the way the market views art and fashion as represented through the balance of opposites and how they coexist: water, oil; air, land; destruction, industrialization; art, science; foreign, domestic; order, chaos; past, present. 

The Creative Director is primarly responsible for setting, communicating and executing the creative direction for RVCA product.

Primary Responsibilities Include:

  • Research
  • Guide designers to undertake market research and analysis using available resources to establish style, color, fabric and concepts of upcoming seasons.
  • Conduct research on key performing products and collections in the USA and other Regions.
  • Direct involvement in the structuring of the seasonal Design Line Plan.
  • Conduct regular competitor analysis.
  • Research and present innovative ideas to expand product range opportunities
  • Design & Development.
  • Produce the Seasonal Creative Design Intent document.
  • Provide creative direction to the Annual and Seasonal Category Strategies.
  • Oversee the development of concepts and ideas for each season and communicate to all Divisions.
  • Approve proposed garments and accessories ensuring best use of color, fabrics, trim, logo, graphics and garment finishing.
  • Conceptualize and manage catalogue creative and select key photoshoot styles.
  • Ensure timely samples are developed and built for adopted product range.
  • Manage the creation and development of effective category strategies.
  • Merchandising / Production
  • Ensure the progressive finalization of garments and accessories from concept to production stage.
  • Work with Product Development Managers to ensure cost conformity.
  • Develop knowledge of supplier base and sourcing activities.
  • Marketing
  • Present the Design Intent and Category Strategy documents to the Marketing and Retail Team.
  • Select and arrange for photo shoot samples.
  • Develop creative direction for seasonal photo shoots with Marketing Team.
  • Assist the Marketing Team in the selection of media material.
  • Ensure the effective execution of seasonal product marketing creative direction.
  • Sales/Retail
  • Implement Speed to Market within design to activate product according to key market trends.
  • Present Design Intent and category strategies to the Sales and Retail Team.
  • Liaise with Account Managers and Retail Buyers to ensure the right product lines are developed.
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with key accounts and Internal Retail Buyers.
  • Leadership and Performance Management
  • Review and set objectives with performance measures for the Designers.
  • Provide leadership and management to the Designers.
  • Ensure recruitment is carried out effectively and in a timely manner.
  • Ensure expectations are clearly understood by all staff through the use of Position Descriptions and Performance Plans and these are supported by clear communication regarding any topical business issues.
  • Carry out ongoing Coaching, Training and Career Management to ensure people in your team are aware of their performance and opportunities for growth.
  • Implement RVCA performance management system, ensure key individuals have retention plans, whilst those who are not meeting expectations are approached in a timely and formal manner.
  • Role Model behaviors expected from staff .
  • Ensure you and your team’s adherence to legal and policy requirements (e.g. Workplace Health and Safety, RVCA policies, harassment and discrimination laws).
  • Other Responsibilities & Duties
  • Other tasks may be assigned from time to time which contribute to the overall success of the company.

Requirements:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Fashion Design is essential.
  • Proven knowledge of industry design with garment construction experience.
  • Understanding of graphic art, colors, fabrics, trim and fit is essential.
  • Sound knowledge of the fashion and fabric industry.
  • Understanding the needs of the market, retailers, suppliers and merchandisers.
  • Extensive experience in a similar role is required.
  • Demonstrated experience to research and develop designs, ideas, themes and convert ideas into products.
  • Experience in the development of themes through story boards.
  • Thorough knowledge of the product design process.
  • Experience in sourcing and production of suppliers.
  • Experience in briefing, directing and supervising a team of designers.
  • Capability to independently manage projects, present and report at a senior management level.
  • Ability to manage the design and development of a complete range.
  • Ability to recognize trends, conceptualize ideas and develop products.
  • Ability to delegate and follow up on delegated tasks.
  • Highly developed organization and time management skills.
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills including the ability to coach and lead people and develop a strong team culture.
  • High level problem solving and decision making ability.
  • Outstanding communication and influencing skills to deal effectively with a broad range of internal and external clients.
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Research skills.
  • Business management skills are desirable.
  • Display passion and motivation for a dynamic, surf/skate lifestyle work environment.
  • Illustrator, Photoshop, Lotus Notes, MS Word and MS Excel computer skills.
